Microsoft Data Access Objects (DAO) is a COM-based data access library for working with the Microsoft Jet and Access database engines. It exposes an object model—databases, tables, queries, indexes, and recordsets—usable from Visual Basic, VBA, and other COM-aware environments to create, query, and manage local data stores. DAO supports transactions, query definitions, relational constraints, and schema manipulation, and it remains a direct and performant option when interacting with native Access/Jet files (.mdb). In newer versions of Access, the same object model is available through the ACE engine for .accdb files.

While later technologies such as ADO and ADO.NET supersede DAO for most new development and for non-Access data sources, DAO is still common in Access/VBA automation, maintenance of legacy desktop applications, and migration projects. Note that ODBCDirect is deprecated; for external relational sources, use ADO/OLE DB or other modern providers.

Microsoft Data Access Objects (DAO) is developed by Microsoft. The most popular version of this product among our users is 3.5.
